NASA needed a way to cover the Titan missile on the launchpad to protect its ultra-sensitive technologies.

Time Frame: 1 week

Our Solution

Space is known to scientists as being unforgiving. Small miscalculations can result in disastrous outcomes and cost billions of dollars, or worse, lives. One speck of dust can cause machinery built to work in space irreparable damage, rendering it useless space junk.

With reports of a storm approaching, NASA contacted LaminatedFILMS to see if we would be able to make a custom debris shield, or cover, to protect their expensive rocket on the launchpad.

With our extensive experience in working with sterile packaging, we knew exactly the kinds of contaminants and corrosion elements that the rocket would be exposed to while awaiting take off. We also had available optimal materials and production techniques that were needed to get the job done quickly and flawlessly.

Absorbable Sheets Help Gulf Agency Rescue and Rehab Dozens of Marine Animal Species

On April 20, 2010, an oil drilling platform located 50 miles off the shores of Mississippi and Louisiana blew up and collapsed, releasing thousands of gallons of oil. Within weeks, the oil spread across the waters and reached the shores of the Gulf Coast.

The spill proved to be detrimental to dozens of varieties of marine mammals, sea turtles, birds and fish—species that rescuers from the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies (IMMS) in Gulfport, Miss., continue to diligently work to rehabilitate in hopes of conserving the marine animals’ natural habitats in the Gulf.

This summer, LaminatedFILMS joined the clean-up effort by donating 30,540 specialty sheets of absorption material to IMMS.

Director of Manufacturing Support Rick Garnsey said the donation was in response to a news report that he happened to catch on TV. “We were storing yards of absorption material that we had used to create a specialty bag for a customer, and it was a simple matter to cut the leftover material into sheets, package it in poly bags, and ship them to the marine rescue agency,” he said. “The sheets can also be shared with other agencies if there is a need.”

To date, dozens of endangered marine animals have been rescued, rehabilitated and returned to their natural habitats, including several Kemp’s Ridley Sea turtles, the most endangered species of sea turtles worldwide.

Manufacturer Recognized for Superior Performance of Space Flight Program Bags and Blankets

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – June 16, 2010 – LaminatedFILMS & Packaging has received a 2009 Boeing Performance Excellence Award. The Boeing Company issues the award annually to recognize suppliers that have achieved superior performance. LaminatedFILMS maintained a minimum Silver composite performance rating for each month of the 12-month performance period, Oct. 1, 2008, to Sept. 30, 2009.

This year, Boeing recognized 486 suppliers that achieved either a Gold or Silver level Boeing Performance Excellence Award. LaminatedFILMS, a supplier to Boeing from its dedicated facility in Melbourne, FL, for more than 20 years, is among 358 suppliers to receive the Silver level of recognition. The company supplies bagging materials used to cover satellites and blankets for the Titan family of missiles and launch vehicles built by Boeing.

“We are very proud to have been recognized by Boeing for our work in developing and supplying materials used in the U.S. space flight program,” said Jim Landers, CEO of LaminatedFILMS. “Every day, all of our employees—in both our New Hampshire and Florida facilities—strive to accommodate the detailed quality, delivery and purchasing requirements mandated by both Boeing and the Kennedy Space Center.”

“Boeing has always been viewed as a valued partner,” added Kay Wood, Plant Manager of the Melbourne facility. “Although we’ve been working with the company for more than two decades, this year all of the criteria kicked in and we were presented with this prestigious award. It’s a great way to recognize LaminatedFILMS’ ongoing dedication to developing and supplying cutting-edge packaging solutions according to Boeing’s stringent criteria.”

The Problem

NASA wanted to take their pet jellyfish with them into space.
Time Frame to Complete: 1 year

Our Solution

Jellyfish, although seemingly one of the simplest organisms on our planet, share some characteristics with humans. They have neurons, or nerve cells, similar to ours and they have gravity receptors not unlike those in the human inner ear to help give them direction as they move.

NASA created an experiment to take jellyfish into space to study the effects of zero gravity (body mass loss, calcium deficiency, equilibrium…) to understand how humans can better adapt to living out in the great beyond. So, we dreamed up and produced bags with fitments (tubes) and ports which served as jellyfish habitats and allowed the scientists to reach in and perform experiments on the jellyfish while space-bound. The bags kept the jellyfish alive and healthy in transit enabling NASA to learn more about life in space.

Explore NASA’s official site and dream up new inventions (which we can then package for you!)
